The Egg Drop Challenge
Inspired by Mark Rober's famous Egg Drop from Space experiment, this hands-on challenge invites young engineers to design, build and test a contraption that can protect an egg from a dramatic fall. The goal is simple: create a structure strong enough to survive the impact without breaking open the reusable slime-filled egg!
Start by constructing a protective prism using the included tubes and connectors. Place the egg inside, attach the parachute and prepare for the first drop. Will your design keep the egg safe, or will it splat? Test your creation from different heights and discover how changes to the structure affect the result.
Build, Test and Improve
Experiment with different arrangements, reposition the landing balls and adjust your design to explore the best combination of strength, balance and shock absorption. Children can rebuild their structures repeatedly, learning from each drop to improve their next attempt.
For an extra challenge, try incorporating household materials such as straws to create new structures, or experiment with protecting a real egg under suitable adult supervision.
