FAQ

Why don’t your products say “Natural”? I’ve read the ingredients lists on the back of all of them and they are all “Natural”?
That was a big debate around the office and we really wanted to put the word “natural” on our products but the truth is, if you pull a carrot out of the ground and rinse it off with water before you eat it, it’s truly NOT 100% “natural” any more. The water probably contains Fluoride and other chemicals that have now deposited on your “natural” carrot, making it NOT 100% natural any more. Make sense? Most companies still claim it because it’s what the consumers want to hear but we follow the rules by the book. All of our Baby Bum products are “plant based” and don’t contain any toxic or synthetic chemicals so they are “natural” to us, we just don’t claim it because we wanna be completely transparent.

PLEASE tell me this ISN’T true!!!! I heard companies put numbing agents into Baby Shampoos and Bubble Baths to numb children’s eyes so the toxins don’t sting them?
I wish we could tell you this wasn’t true, but it is. Instead of taking out the “stinging” agents/chemicals, some companies just add in “numbing” agents/chemicals so they can pass the “Tear Free” independent third party testing and make the claim on the bottle. Since we make our products for our very own kids there was absolutely no way we were going to put “numbing” agents into our bath products. We just used cleaner ingredients and were awarded the “Tear Free” claim without having to numb our kid’s eyes, as crazy as that sounds.

Can I use Baby Bum on my child with eczema?
Okay, there are some answers on “Ask The Bum” that we can be a little cheeky about, not this one. The American Academy of Dermatology and National Eczema Association recommend using mild cleansers that are fragrance-free and dye-free on children with eczema. Our Baby Bum Fragrance Free Shampoo & Wash is an ultra-mild foaming cleanser made from plant-based ingredients, free from sulfates, dyes and parabens, and has a low pH which the National Eczema Association says helps with itch relief. It dispenses as a rich foam, which allows you to use just enough, not too much, to gently clean your child's skin. In addition, the AAD recommends a fragrance-free, dye-free moisturizer to hydrate and soothe itchy skin patches. Our Baby Bum Fragrance Free Everyday Lotion is a non-greasy, moisturizing emulsion that absorbs quickly into skin when applied after bathing, or any time, day or night. You can also try our Baby Bum Calming Everyday Lotion, which adds natural Lavender essential oil to comfort and soothe itchiness. Finally, while we’re super stoked that you “Trust The Bum” (us), for diagnosis and treatment of eczema, please consult your doctor.

Why did Sun Bum make Baby Bum? Is it really necessary?
Yes, a baby’s skin is 10x more sensitive than ours and because skin’s natural barrier function is still developing in babies and kids, they are more vulnerable to environmental exposure. That’s why our products have been carefully formulated using natural, plant-based ingredients in just the right amounts to protect, nourish and hydrate our next generation.

Are Baby Bum products vegan?
Almost all of our Baby Bum products are vegan, meaning they are free from animal or animal by-products. A couple of Baby Bum products are not 100% vegan because they use beeswax, whose specific melting point and physical properties helps create stable, thick, emollient and protective formulations. Our non-vegan products are the Diaper Cream and Coconut Balm but we are working to remove beeswax from these formulas as well.

What is Monoi Oil?
Monoi Oil is a super cool gift from nature. Tahitian for "scented oil", it has been one of the best beauty secrets in Hawaii for longer than any of us can remember. It contains no sulfates, parabens, silicones, phthalates or anything synthetic whatsoever. It is the pure combination of Coconut Oil and the nature essence of Tiare Flowers (Tahitian Gardenias). Monoi Oil is created by pure extra virgin coconut oil being pressed from the natural falling of coconuts from their palm tree. Then, the tiare flower is soaked in that coconut oil for approximately a month. Sorry for the long answer but we love it so much and we know you will too.

Is this product only for babies, or can adults also use it?
Totally. You’d laugh if you saw some of the big burly manly men in our community that only use and swear by our Baby Bum products. We’d advise you don’t though, cuz they might come after you.

Can I use this product while pregnant or breast-feeding?
Yes, our Baby Bum products are formulated using mild, plant-based ingredients in just the right amounts to protect, nourish and hydrate. Good for both you and your rad little bundle of joy.

Can I use this product if my child has a nut allergy?
Baby Bum products are hypoallergenic, allergy-tested and dermatologist tested. Outside of coconuts which some consider a tree nut, we don’t use nuts in any Baby Bum products; however, we can’t guarantee there is no trace of nut in your products, as we don’t have any program in place to certify our manufacturing facilities as nut-free. For severe allergies, please consult your doctor before use.

Is Baby Bum reef friendly?
Yes, we actually care more about our rad little fishy friends than some of our dirty human ones. :) Baby Bum Sunscreens are zinc based, are oxybenzone free nor other chemical sunscreens, and are safe for oceans and reefs.

What is Oxybenzone? Is it safe?
Oxybenzone is a widely used sunscreen ingredient. It is approved and recommended by the FDA and Skin Cancer Foundation as an effective sunscreen and has been used for over 25 years in combination with other sunscreen actives to help cover the broad spectrum of UV rays.

That said, a few years ago a study came out showing that Oxybenzone may be a contributing factor to the bleaching/killing of our ocean reefs. While the study is highly contested by the corporate sunscreen community, there is just no way we would ever take the chance of hurting the very living and breathing thing that creates the waves we surf on every day. Not to mention our little fishy friends we love.

Bottom Line: We don’t use Oxybenzone.

Is Baby Bum Sunscreen the best for our baby?
Well, we certainly think so, but that said and just to be clear, if you’re talking about a baby under six months old than we’ve got a completely different answer for ya…. and that’s…you really shouldn’t have your “baby” exposed to the sun at all. Sunscreens definitely help and there are a lot of great natural sunscreens out there that you could use, BUT you should really just try your hardest to keep your little 6 month and under bambinos out of the sun completely. We know it’s super tempting and tough to manage sometimes, but it’s the responsible thing to do. Trust The Bum. If you have to be outdoors, we recommend consulting with your doctor before use.

What does SPF mean?
SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor which is a relative measure of how long a sunscreen will protect you from ultraviolet (UV) rays. (see chart). That said, no sunscreen blocks 100% of UV rays and the main thing that affects protection level is applying it correctly. Dermatologists recommend using 3 tablespoons of sunscreen to protect your whole body. SPF ratings are significantly decreased if you don’t apply enough and most people only apply 1/3 of the sunscreen they need. So make sure you use enough and don’t neglect hard to reach and easily forgotten places like your ears, feet and upper back and remember to reapply. Lastly, we don’t care if you use our sunscreen, just use sunscreen.

Are Baby Bum products gluten free?
Yes.

What does broad spectrum mean?
Broad-spectrum sunscreen protects against the harmful effects of both UVA (aging rays) and UVB (burning rays). To be classified as offering broad-spectrum protection, a product needs to absorb or reflect at least 90% of the UV rays. All Sun Bum and Baby Bum Sunscreens offer broad-spectrum coverage. UVA rays penetrate the skin more deeply than UVB rays and are primarily responsible for premature skin aging and wrinkling. UVA rays have also been shown to cause skin damage at the cellular level. UVB rays damage the outer layers of the skin. They are the main cause of sun burn and play a key role in the development of skin cancer.

Do you guys ever use dyes in any of your products?
Never!! Dyes are used to give things artificial color and have no other benefit. When ingested, studies indicate that synthetic dyes have potential harmful effects on the health and behavior of children.

What is pH and why is pH balance important?
pH describes the acidity or alkalinity of a material, even skin. Skin is slightly acidic, which is part of its natural defense mechanism to maintain a healthy flora and deter harmful bacteria from making themselves at home on your skin--like a dirty friend that wants to crash on your new sweet couch. Baby Bum products are all formulated to be mild and maintain the skin’s natural pH.

I noticed you have fragrance-free products as well as some with fragrance. I heard that fragrances can cause skin irritation?
Our Baby Bum fragranced formulas include natural ingredients used at safe levels for even the most sensitive skin. Since we use all of our products on our very own families we DO NOT use artificial/synthetic fragrances in our Baby Bum products that some people find to cause skin irritation or sensitivity. That said, we have formulated some products without any fragrance being added, if that’s more your thing. They are in the white packaging. Happy Bum, Happy Mum.

Does Baby Bum test on animals?
Baby Bum is cruelty free. Our products are not tested on animals-EVER.

How old does my child need to be to use Baby Bum products?
All the products are a little different so just follow the directions on the specific packaging. Biggest thing is, remember less is more, so avoid over-use of any product on babies under 6 months of age.
