With vent

  • Helps reduce feeding problems
  • Helps preserve vitamins
  • Helps digestion
  • Vent and nipple create vacuum-free feeding

Without vent

  • For babies whose feeding becomes more developed
  • Convenience of a nipple-vented bottle

Our bottles are known for reducing colic, spit-up, burping, and gas. Moms and dads prefer Dr. Brown's because they can help alleviate feeding issues for baby. It's yet another way we help babies experience happy feeding.

Vitamins C, A, and E are critical for health in infancy. The Dr. Brown's vent system reduces air bubble oxidation to help preserve bottle milk nutrients. This is important because vitamins and lipids are fragile, and susceptible to nutrient loss.

The Power Of Choice

Options is the first convertible bottle that can be used with or without the vent system. The nipple venting creates a paced flow, and provides a feeding experience similar to most nipple-vented bottles. This innovative bottle effectively and efficiently covers all parents' needs. Dr. Brown's Options grows with the needs of your baby and offers healthy benefits whether your little one is experiencing feeding challenges or not. Options gives you the power of choice.

Designed to Grow with Baby
The new vent system is designed to grow with baby, and we recommend using this system to experience all the health benefits of our bottle. Some moms and dads find removing the vent a convenient option as their baby's feeding becomes more developed. The nipple venting creates a paced flow, and provides a feeding experience similar to most nipple-vented bottles. Options bottles fit most breast pumps, and are BPA-free.

The NEW Options+ PLUS updates for Narrow-Neck:

The bottle vessel and nipples for both Narrow Options and Options+ are the same. You can reuse your current Options bottle vessels and nipples for Options+ as long as they are in good condition.

  • Enhanced internal vent system
  • Improved collar and cap

Enhanced Internal Vent System

The anti-colic internal vent system features an enhanced design to improve an already innovative feeding experience. The fully-vented bottle is clinically proven to reduce colic, better preserves nutrients, aids in digestion for a good night’s sleep, and provides a flow rate that supports breastfeeding.

It’s Great to Have Options+™

Our bottles work best with the vent system in place but it’s great to have options when baby’s feeding develops. Just remove the vent when you feel it’s time – no need to introduce a different bottle. Our bottle nipples feature their own venting system that offers a feeding experience similar to most nipple-vented bottles.

Easy On & Off Bottle Cap

Caps are redesigned and now stay shut more securely and open more easily, even by one-handed moms and dads.

Experiencing Leaks In Your Options Bottle? You could be using it WRONG! Here are some DOs & DON'Ts

Don’t Overfill the Bottles

Avoid overfilling your bottle. The internal vent system may not function properly if the liquid goes over the fill line marked on the bottle. The extra fluid may escape into the vent (and onto your hands as you feed the baby). If the bottles holds eight ounces, never put more than eight ounces! Eight ounces of water and powdered formula is equal to more than eight ounces of fluid, which means overfilling!

Don’t Heat the Milk With the Vent in Place

If you keep the Dr. Brown’s vent in place as you heat milk or formula, the heated milk will expand and liquid will be forced up into the vent. This leads to the vent leaking. Milk should never pass up through the vent!

Heat your bottles without the vents (the preferred option) or loosen the collar one-half turn during heating, and then tighten it before baby’s feeding. Heating the bottle with a tight collar can force liquid into the vent.

Avoid overheating. In addition to potentially being dangerous to your baby, overheating can expand the air in the bottle, pushing liquid through the vent system, which can cause leaks. A good rule of thumb is to avoid warming the liquid beyond body temperature, 98° Fahrenheit.

Don’t Shake the Bottle With the Vent Inserted

If you are using formula, avoid shaking the bottle to mix the formula, as this can cause liquid to enter the vent. Instead, stir the formula gently with a spoon to dissolve lumps, which can clog the nipple opening. This method has the added benefit of reducing air bubbles (which can further reduce infant gas).

If you prefer shaking your bottles, use Dr. Brown’s storage caps. Shake with the cap in place, and when the formula is properly mixed, you can remove the cap and insert the vent.

Don’t Submerge the Reservoir Tube

When feeding your baby, avoid keeping the bottle perfectly level. More specifically, you should avoid submerging the reservoir tube (the long part of the vent) under liquid as you feed your infant. If the bottle isn’t held properly and the tube is submerged in the milk, then you might end up with some leakage. The ideal angle is 45 degrees during feeding. This should consistently keep the end of the tube out of the the liquid.

Feed your baby at 45 degrees angle.

If you mess up and liquid ends up inside the reservoir tube, all you need to do is stop the feeding, turn the bottle upright, and loosen the nipple collar a bit to release the built-up pressure. The milk will fall back into place at the bottom of the bottle, and you can then re-tighten the collar and resume feeding.

Don’t Over-Tighten or Under-Tighten the Nipple Collar

Over-tightening or under-tightening the nipple collar can cause leakage. Over-tightening causes too much pressure to build up, and under-tightening the collar doesn't provide the seal to hold back the liquid during feeding.

Your natural instincts will allow you to tighten the bottle just right. If not, just follow this rule: twist the collar onto the bottle until you feel a small amount of resistance, then give it one more half-turn.

Use an Age-Appropriate Nipple

If your nipple is the incorrect size, your baby may suck too hard and cause the nipple seal to break. This means you need to change to a faster-flow nipple. On the other hand, if your baby tries to block the flow or slow down the milk, it can cause fluid to be forced backward into the vent. This means you need to move to a slower-flow nipple.

Follow these tips, and you may never experiencing frustrating leaks again!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Click here for full list of FAQs.

Q. Can I use my Dr Brown's bottles without the vent?
A. The blue vent in the Dr Brown's Natural Flow Bottle must remain in place. This internal vent system creates 100% vacuum free feeding that's best for mum and baby. The bottle cannot be used without the blue vent in place.

However the green vent in the Dr Brown's Options Bottle can be removed. Some parents find removing the vent a convenient option when baby's feeding becomes more developed. Options grows with your baby, allowing you to remove the vent when your baby develops beyond, or does not experience, feeding problems.

Without the green vent, Options provides a feeding experience similar to most teat-vented bottles. This teat venting creates a controlled flow, offering babies an easy and convenient way to feed at their own pace. Please note that an Options teat (with the scalloped base) must be used on the Option's bottle.

Q. Can the bottle be used to heat formula in the microwave?
A. We do not recommend using a microwave oven to heat the bottle because microwave ovens can create hotspots in milk or formula.

Q. Are Dr Brown's bottles and components dishwasher safe?
A. Yes, we recommend loading them in the top rack of your dishwasher. Dr Brown's also now offer a Dishwasher Basket for convenient cleaning.

Q. Can I sterilise the Dr Brown's bottles?
A. Yes, you may put them in a steriliser or boil them in water. Dr. Brown’s offers a Microwave Steam Steriliser designed specifically for our baby bottles.

Q. Why does my bottle leak?
A. The patented vent provides an air passage way that allows air to enter the bottle which allows the baby to nurse without fighting the negative affects of the vacuum found in other baby bottles. Under certain conditions the milk or formula can exit through the vent. For example if the liquid is overheated the expanding air inside the bottle pushes the liquid through the vent causing leakage. Or if the bottle is shaken to mix formula the liquid may enter the vent and leak. Also if the bottle isn't held properly and the end of the reservoir tube is submerged in the fluid leakage may occur.

Q. What to do in the unlikely case of bottle leakage.
A. When liquid gets into the venting system, it can sometimes leak out around the teat collar. This can happen three ways:

  • If you heat your bottle with the teat collar securely in place, the liquid will be forced up into the vent as it expands. To avoid this, either heat the bottle without the teat collar or loosen the teat collar one-half turn after heating to allow the pressure to equalise. Then, re-tighten it before feeding.
  • If you use powdered formula and mix it by shaking the bottle, liquid can get into the vent. The solution for this is to mix the formula by stirring it with a spoon rather than by shaking.
  • If you overheat the liquid in the bottle, the vapour will rise and condense in the vent. To prevent this, avoid warming the liquid beyond body temperature.

Options Bottles with New Style Teats

To determine which style teat you have can be seen by looking under the rim of the teat. The ‘New Style’ teats have a scalloped base.

We advise to tighten the collar down to ensure this scalloped base has a tight fit to the rim of the bottle.

This process is also advisable when using the New Options bottles with New Style teats.

As with our previous range, if you use powdered formula and mix it by shaking the bottle, liquid can get into the vent which can cause further leaking. The solution for this is to mix the formula by stirring it with a spoon rather than by shaking.

Q. Where are your products manufactured?
A. Many of the products are made in the United States and some are manufactured in China, Germany and other countries. All of their products undergo extensive third party testing. Dr Brown will remain vigilant in monitoring the quality to ensure that it maintains its commitment to produce innovative and safe products that deserve the trust of parents with infants.

Q. My bottle is leaking.
A. We are sorry to hear about the trouble you are having with your Dr. Brown's bottles. Hopefully some of these tips can help solve this problem for you.
Because the Dr. Brown's bottle is fully-vented, it allows positive-pressure flow, similar to breastfeeding. This is essential for the baby to feed without having to suck against a vacuum. Under certain conditions, the liquid can exit through the vent. For example, if the liquid is overheated, the expanding air inside the bottle pushes the liquid through the vent causing leakage. Or if the bottle is shaken to mix formula (which we do not recommend), the liquid may enter the vent. When liquid gets into the venting system, it can sometimes leak out around the nipple collar. Here are some tips to help avoid this:

  • If you heat your bottle with the nipple collar securely in place, the liquid will be forced up into the vent as it expands. To avoid this, remove the internal parts (vent insert and reservoir tube) prior to warming. Do not over-tighten the collar.
  • If you use powdered formula and mix it by shaking the bottle, liquid can get into the vent. The solution for this is to mix the formula by stirring it with a spoon rather than by shaking.
  • If you overheat the liquid in the bottle, the vapor will rise and condense in the vent. To prevent this, avoid warming the liquid beyond body temperature.
  • Over-tightening of the collar will also create a pressure build-up. You should twist the collar enough to close.
  • Hold the bottle at a 45 degree angle when feeding your baby. The end of the reservoir tube should be out of the liquid.
  • Please ensure that you have the appropriate level nipple for the age of your baby.

Q. Do your bottles contain BPA?

All of our bottle parts (cap, nipple, collar, vent insert and vent reservoir) are interchangeable and always have been BPA free. None of Dr. Brown's products have ever contained PVC, phthalates, or lead.

Parents have come to rely on this patented technology, designed by a doctor, to help reduce colic, spit-up, burping and gas. In addition, a recent independent study found that the technology that eliminates air bubbles in our bottles also helps to preserve the Vitamin C content in the milk more than any other bottle on the market.

All versions of Dr. Brown's Natural Flow bottles feature the unique internal vent system that makes our bottles popular with parents and babies.

Q. What are your bottles made of?

Dr. Brown’s bottles are made of BPA-free polypropylene plastic or BPA-free, pharmaceutical-grade borosilicate glass that is heat and thermal shock-resistant. All components of the Dr. Brown’s bottle, including the vent insert, vent reservoir, travel disk, nipple collar, and cap are also BPA-free. Our nipples are made of silicone.
