Isn't getting some sun good for you?
20 minutes of daily sunlight (without sunscreen) gives you a healthy dose of Vitamin D, which is essential for good health.

Where is Sun Bum made?
Sun Bum ® Original and Signature sun care products are made, tested, and filled in the beautiful sunshine state of Florida.

Baby Bum is made in Australia because they are way ahead of the U.S. In regards to developing purely natural protection sunscreens.

When does sunscreen expire?
Our sunscreens all have a shelf life of 3 years. To get an idea of when a product was made, check out the bottom, it will either have an expiration date or a lot number. If it has a lot number the first two digits represent the year the product was filled.

Do your hair products use Sulfates?
We chose NOT to use Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) or Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLES). Instead we use Sodium Coco Sulfate that is derived from nature (coconuts) and is very mild, non-irratating, non-toxic and not harmful to the environment.

Many products these days tout “sulfate-free” formulas leading consumers to believe sulfates are bad. But sulfates encompass a wide range of very different chemicals with very different chemical properties. For example, iron sulfate is a common form of iron used in supplements for people and soil for plants. Magnesium sulfate (aka “Epsom salts”) are used in therapeutic baths. And there are even organisms found near deep-sea thermal vents that use naturally occurring sulfates for energy in place of sunlight. Clearly, not all sulfates are bad.

Typically, the sulfates people should be concerned about in everyday products are the aforementioned sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and sodium laureth sulfate (SLES). SLS was the star surfactant used in care products for many years, but it irritated people’s skin (among other things), so companies looked for ways to make it gentler. They found that by putting SLS through a process called ethoxylation, they could create the milder surfactant SLES. This success was short-lived, though, as they quickly learned that ethoxylation left behind two toxic, carcinogenic chemicals, ethylene oxide and 1, 4-dioxane.

Thus was born the market for “SLS-free” and “SLES-free” products, which somehow evolved into the marketing claim “sulfate-free.” Anyway, long story short — sodium coco sulfate (SCS) is NOT the same as SLS or SLES. It’s milder, safer, doesn’t have any toxic contaminants, and is made from coconut oil and not petroleum.

What should I use on my kids?
For children under 6 months old your best bet is to keep them out of the sun, cover them with clothes, a hat, and/or an umbrella. If you must use sunscreen, first consult your pediatrician. For children over 6 months old we recommend a mineral based sunscreen like our new Baby Bum ® line. It use a natural zinc oxide base to offer the same broad spectrum protection and water resistance rating (80 minutes) as our Original and Signature lines. It’s the best option for toddlers, kids and those with sensitive skin.

What's the difference between Mineral and Organic Sunscreens?
Mineral Sunscreens: Unlike organic sunscreens, micronized mineral sunscreens are insoluble, protect against the entire spectrum of UVA/UVB radiation and will not break down over time. This makes them the sunscreen of choice for endurance athletes and anyone who spends extended periods of time outdoors without the opportunity to reapply.

Organic Sunscreens: Organic sunscreens are soluble and therefore more resistant to wiping, sweating and abrasion. Each sunscreen targets specific wavelengths of the UV spectrum (UVA or UVB). This makes them ideal for strategic use in sports specific products as a backup for Micronized Mineral sunscreens.

What is Photostability?
To protect the skin, sunscreens use UV filters that absorb radiation from the sun. When a sunscreen is exposed to this radiation, it can alter the chemical structure of the UV filters, thus degrading their protective capabilities. A “photostable” sunscreen is able to withstand the effects of UV exposure better, so it keeps its level of protection.

Does Sun Bum test on animals?
Sun Bum is cruelty-free. Our products are not tested on animals ever.

I am a Vegan. What products can I use?
Most of our products are Vegan including our Original Sunscreen Lotions (SPF 15-50), Original Sunscreen Sprays, Mineral Sunscreen Collection, SPF Lip Balms, Cool Down lotions and sprays along with our extensive line of Baby Bum and Hair Care products.

Cocobalms, Tinted Lip Balms, Signature Lip Balm, Mineral Lip Balm and Baby Bum Diaper Rash Cream contain beeswax. We are currently working on a solution using synthetic beeswax. Our Blonde range of hair products uses natural Lehua Honey.

Are your products Fragrance Free?
Sun Bum® Signature Line is fragrance free. Don’t worry though it still smells good, because it contains aloe and cocoa butter.

Baby Bum® has no synthetic fragrances. It does have a vanilla scent from the natural ingredient Vanillin, an extract of Vanilla.

The Original Line sunscreens and lotions do contain our signature banana fragrance.

Do your products contain Parabens? Vitamin A?
We no longer use Parabens or Vitamin A in any of our products. Most of our products never have contained either of these ingredients including our Original Sunscreen Lotions, our Signature Line, and our Baby Bum line.

Why do some sunscreens stain my clothes?
It’s rare but that orange-ish stain can happen when Avobenzone, an active ingredient in many sunscreen brands mixes with water that has a super high iron content, most likely the water you wash your clothes in. If sunscreen gets on your clothing before it dries, the iron in your water can cause oxidation, aka a rust stain.

You can avoid this stain and those caused by the oils and moisturizers in sunscreen by applying the product naked, which is always a good time, and allowing the lotion or spray to dry completely before putting your clothes on or by using an Avobenzone-free sunscreen, like our Signature line.

Our lotion and spray containers have been designed to keep the product in, and not spilling onto your belongings, however - our products - like all liquids - should be packed in a plastic bag that has a tight closure before putting them in your beach bag, suitcase, or purse. Sun Bum cannot be held responsible for damages to your belongings due to spills where the product was not properly packed.

To get sunscreen stains out there are lots of DIY suggestions online that can help. We’ve heard that it’s best to remove all excess with a spatula, blunt knife or spoon. If any liquid remains, blot it with a dry cloth. Sprinkle the stain with baking soda to absorb any excess oils and leave for 30 mins. Brush off any excess powder, then rub the stain with a color free dishwashing liquid and then wash according to care instructions on the garment. If the stain has not come out completely after a first wash - do not dry - repeat wash steps until the stain comes clean.

Are even your spray cans recyclable?
Yes, most towns accept spray cans as part of their collection program, if not, you can always take them to a local recycling center. Make sure the can is completely empty and detach the lid and recycle separately with your plastics. Thanks for the great question, and for helping us keep this place sweet for the next generation.

What is Oxybenzone? Is it REEF SAFE?
Oxybenzone is a widely used sunscreen ingredient around the world. It is approved and recommended by the FDA and Skin Cancer Foundation as an effective sunscreen and has been used for over 25 years in combination with other sunscreen actives to help cover the broad spectrum of UV rays.

That said, a few years ago an American study came out showing that Oxybenzone may be a contributing factor to the bleaching/killing of our ocean reefs. While the study is highly contested by the corporate sunscreen community, we decided to start reformulating all of our products to remove this ingredient. There was just no way we could take the chance of hurting the living and breathing reefs that create the waves we surf on…not to mention our little fishy friends we love.

Is it okay to get a little base tan when I'm pasty?
Dear pasty dude or dudette, any sun exposure damages and ages the skin, so even a hint of color means you’re creating wrinkles, sagging, and cell injury that could lead to skin cancer.

What is Parsol® 1789?
Also known as Avobenzone, Parsol® 1789 offers full spectrum UVA protection. Because of its ability to protect against a wider range of rays then other organic sunscreens it has become a go to ingredient to achieve broad spectrum coverage.

Are Sun Bum Sunscreens Safe?
Yes, in all cases, Sun Bum follows the recommendations and guidelines set by the Skin Cancer Foundation (SCF), the American Cancer Society (ACS), and the FDA. The Skin Cancer Foundation is internationally recognized as the educational leader to the public and medical communities related to skin cancer prevention. Sun Bum sunscreens are stringently tested, approved, and recommended by the SCF.

When we started developing our original formula in 2010 it seemed obvious that we would make an “all natural” product, first, because we care about protecting the environment, and second, we knew we would be slathering our products on our very own family and friends. We are NOT in this for the money, we are in it to protect ourselves and the ones we love. One in five of us will get skin cancer in our lifetime, (1 in 3 Caucasians). That said, as we did the yearlong research on the subject we found that a lot of the “natural” sunscreens sounded great but didn’t actually cover the sun’s critical wavelength (broad spectrum). The other research that sealed the deal for us was that although everyone wants a “natural” sunscreen, most of the reviews we read were customers complaining about the way the “natural” products felt on their skin (too thick, sticky, made them look ghostly, smelled bad, had to scrub it off, short shelf life, etc…). We knew if we were going to move the needle on skin cancer in our community, we would need to create a formula that our friends and family would actually want to use, and love the way it smelled, felt on their skin, went on and came off. So, we developed a formula with as few FDA and SCF approved chemicals as possible, to give us the feel, smell, and functionality we all wanted, and took out the rest.

Sun Bum uses a mix of organic and inorganic sunscreens as recommended by the FDA, SCF, and ACS, as opposed to the recommendations of non-scientific lobbyist groups. We based our decisions on real science, on how to best protect our friends and families from the FACT that someone in America dies every minute from skin cancer.

We totally respect, understand, and appreciate your concerns about sunscreen ingredients, and we know there is much debate, so we will continue to work hard to stay informed on new “scientific” findings from around the world.

Is Sun Bum Waterproof or Water Resistant?
All of our sunscreens have the highest possible Water Resistance rating of 80 minutes. Waterproof is no longer a claim that can be made according to the ruling made by the FDA in 2011. There are only two allowed Water Resistant ratings, 80 minute or 40 minute. Advances in research have allowed companies to formulate sunscreens that adhere well to your skin. However, regardless of the claims, you will have to reapply if you’re sweating heavily or doing activity in the water.

Do your sunscreen sprays work as good as your amazing sunscreen lotions?
Yes, as long as you make sure to rub it into your skin after spraying it on to make sure you are evenly and totally covered. Sprays are super convenient but can be tricky on windy days so make sure the sunscreen is going on your body and not into thin air.

Do you really need sunscreen if you have dark skin?
It’s true that more skin pigment = more melanin = more natural protection, but people with dark skin are still at risk for skin cancer. And it’s often deadlier because it’s hidden in places like hands and feet and not diagnosed until it’s in a serious stage. Bob Marley died at the age of 36 from skin cancer that went undiagnosed for years on his foot.

What is Broad Spectrum?
Broad-spectrum sunscreen protects against the harmful effects of both UVA (aging rays) and UVB (burning rays). To be classified as offering broad-spectrum protection, a product needs to absorb or reflect at least 90% of the UV rays. All Sun Bum Sunscreens offer broad-spectrum coverage. UVA rays penetrate the skin more deeply than UVB rays and are primarily responsible for premature skin aging and wrinkling. UVA rays have also been shown to cause skin damage at the cellular level. UVB rays damage the outer layers of the skin. They are the main cause of sun burn and play a key role in the development of skin cancer.
